Dematophagoides Pteronyssinus, more commonly known as “The Dust Mite”. They feed on dead skin cells that we shed from our bodies and live their whole lives in our carpets : hatching, growing, eating, defacating, mating and laying eggs. Out of sight and harmless to most of us. Herds of dust mites live deep in the carpet and may number in the millions. It is their bathroom habits that make us itch and wheeze. Many people develop severe allergies to dust mite droppings. They have a life span of 40-60 days and generations of mites could be living in your carpets right now !
